| Notes for Amos S. McCREA |
| Amos graduated in 1851from medical school with honours. He practiced medicine in Roseneath, Hastings, Norwood, Campbellford and Stoney Creek.18 In 1851-1852 he practised in Stoney Creek, Kitley and Norwood. He practised in Keene beginning in 1853 for 30 years. He moved to Peterborough in 1882, and back to Keene in 1884. His hobby was astronomy, and he had a telescope (unusual for that time and place). He had a "veritable first aid centre" at the "Clarendon Corner" in Hastings. He frequently dealt with sawmill accidents, cotton and woollen mill accidents, Canadian cholera, scarlet fever, burned and scalded children, and children having accidents with lye.44 |
| Research Notes |
NAME: His first name(s) is/are also given as Amos.35
BIRTH: Amos is shown as 49 in the 1871 census.31 The date and township of his birth are confirmed.29 His year of birth is confirmed with no parentage or place given.28 His parentage and birthdate are confirmed with no place given.32 His parentage is confirmed with no birthdate or place given.35
MARRIAGE: The year of his marriage to Martha is confirmed.101 Another source shows his first wife as Mary (no last name), b. 1828, d. 1867,28 which seems improbable if he remarried in 1853.
DEATH: His death date is confirmed with no place given.44 His year of death is confirmed with no place given.28 His death date is confirmed with the place given as Keene, Otonabee Twp, Peterborough Co. ON.32
CHILDREN: There is some confusion about Amos's children; different sources show different children. One source says that Amos's only child by is first marriage was an unnamed child born about 1848.32 Amos may also have had a child named Nellie.11 Issues: (1) Unless Edward and Howard are twins, one of them either does not exist or has the wrong birthdate. (2) Two different sources show two different Georges. With the dates given, this is possible, but neither source has both of them. They may in fact be the same person. |
