John never married. He had long curly hair and a beard. He would only sell an animal when the notion seized him. Once he kept two pigs until they became enormous and people fled from them.11
He had iron grey horses which he did not break in until they were 6 or 7 years old. He once drove to Apsley on business and had to have one of horses attended to in the blacksmith shop. The horses were inseparable, and the horse taken in appeared likely to tear the shop down. The other horse had to be taken in in order to get the work done.11 |
