| Austin was in Vasa, Goodhue County, MN in 1860, obviously working as a farmhand. He is also listed that year with his parents in Red Wing. By 1861, he had enlisted in the 8th Illinois Cavalry and gave his residence as Lacon, Marshall County, Illinois. From 1861 to1865 he served in the Civil War. His re-enlistment paper in 1863 gives his age as 20 and his birthplace as Rochester, New York. This is the first clue as to where in New York the Bragg family was from about 1838/39 to 1848/49. There is a William Bragg on the New York census in 1840 in Rochester.29 |
