"He ... grew up in several communities including Eardley, Quebec, Kemptville etc."98
After his first wife's death, "Arthur couldn't take care of a one year old son so left him with his parents Stafford Merrifield and Almira Watts while he immigrated to the United States in 1881. While there he was involved in ranching with Theodore Roosevelt and Sylvanus Ferris as partners. He returned to Canada and on May 23, 1887, he married Ms. Miriam Isabella Purcell of Eardley, Quebec. Miriam and Benjamin moved to the United States to join Arthur.
"He became a lifelong friend of Teddy Roosevelt and he and Sylvanus ran Roosevelt's ranch for several years. In 1906 he completed the term of the U.S. Marshall for Montana and in 1907-1911 Teddy Roosevelt appointed him as U.S. Marshall for Montana. After completing his term, Arthur and Miriam bought a large cattle ranch and fruit orchard in Flathead Lake, Montana, and lived there until Arthur died in October 3, 1919."98 |
