Notes for John McCREA
"JOHN McCREA, the oldest child of SAMUEL and JANET McCREA, was born in 1777 near Stillwater, New York. He was sixteen years old when he accompanied his family to Canada. In 1804 he married PHOEBE EDMUNDS, daughter of WILLIAM EDMUNDS. She was born on March 27, 1884 [sic], but the date of her death is not known. John McCrea died on September 10, 1863.
"John was a very strong man. It is told that once he carried , from Brockville to Merrickville , flour from one bushel of wheat, one broad axe, one set of drag teeth, one log chain, and probably more. Once he made a trip to Montreal for salt and on his way home his horses fell through the ice in the river. He swam around his team and after a great effort was able to pull them out. Reaching shore he found the remains of a fire left by campers which saved his life. He cut the first road through the wilderness from Merrickville to Perth Ontario. When the Scotch immigrants came to that area after 1815, he was employed by them to transport their goods overland to Perth. Although he had a large farm across the Rideau River from Merrickville, Ontario, he was more interested in logging and lumber enterprises. Eventually he became a very wealthy man. Unfortunately some disagreement developed between him and some of his children, and the family split up and moved to other areas, making research in records of their vital statistics very difficult."32
