"[Peter and Matilda] moved [to Slovenia] from Bosnia-Heracegovina. Peter was a tailor and there wasn't much work for him in Slovania. He left Matilda (with five dollars) and John and came to Canada. He saved every penny and sent for them within a year.
"Matilda with John had to travel to Antwerp, Belgium, and sailed from there to Canada. It was quite a trip. She was seasick and during the trip, John, had whooping cough. They travelled from Halifax to Swift Current by train.
"Matilda had thoughts of returning to her homeland, after arriving in Swift Current. However, she stayed. Joyce says her mother crochetted covers for apple boxes, etc. for furniture.
"Peter was an excellent tailor, and worked very hard. (He made suits, etc.) They eventually owned and operated a dry cleaning establishment."740 |
