"Economic conditions, due to a period of drouth and 'rackrenting' prompted the grandfather of our Samuel McCrea to emigrate to Boston. It would seem logical that he came to these shores about 1718 with a group of his neighbors. Because of the unpopularity of these immigrants most of this group went directly to Worchester, Massachusetts, then a frontier town beset with Indian troubles. However, due to an intolerant attitude on the part of the local Congregationalists the group soon dispersed to other locations. Some of them moved to Warren, some to Pelham and some to Coleraine and Bandford further west in Massachusetts. Part of the group went down into Connecticut, and it is believed that Samuel's grandfather was among this group who settled there 1725."27 |
