Alexander immigrated to Ontario in 1833. He bought land at Lot 2, Concession 1, Haldimand Township. He built a little log house at Linlithgow. The boys slept in the loft, and had to sleep on their stomachs because of snow drifting in through the rafters.
He acquired a horse and cow, and the first crops were got in by hitching them together. He stacked sheaves of grain and brought them in a few at a time to thresh in front of the fireplace. His wife Margaret took baskets of eggs and butter and walked to Cobourg to sell them. Their main income was from selling pork to lumber camps. They had to pay $30 a year to the government for their land, and had difficulty raising it.32 |
